Johann Adolph Hasse studied composition in Naples with Nicola Porpora and Alessandro Scarlatti – and went on to become one of the most important composers of the Neapolitan School. The setting of the tragic love story of Pyramus and Thisbe, who were not allowed to see each other due to their parents’ rivaly, is one of Hasse’s most artful compositions, which he himself considered one of his best – and with which he gradually began to approach the reformed opera genre.
