The great “Austrian-Hungarian” violinist and conductor Sándor Végh would have been one hundred years old on May 17, 2012. After founding his famous Végh Quartet and giving major cyclical performances of the complete quartets of Beethoven and Bartók, he set new standards of interpretation starting in 1978 with his Camerata Academica Salzburg. In memory of the great musician who also made Festival history, such close friends and musical companions as Erich Höbarth, Steven Isserlis, Alexander Janiczek, András Schiff, Jörg Widmann and many others will perform two large-scale concerts, which will certainly make you forget time, offering fascinating juxtapositions of works by Bach and Mozart in one and Schubert and Bartók, another friend of Végh’s, in the other. Furthermore, three master courses are devoted to the memory of Sándor Végh, who passed away 15 years ago: master students of the International Musicians Seminar Prussia Cove – founded by Végh in 1972 – will rehearse chamber music works by Mozart and Schubert and also perform them.
