For the finale of the Salzburg Passages two string quartets are on the programme that could hardly be more different: Anton Webern’s extremely dense Bagatellen, op. 9, lasting four minutes and Morton Feldman’s Second String Quartet, with a performance duration of over four and a half hours. These works are separated by worlds of time — experience stretches from the most compressed instant into undreamt-of expansiveness. The Salzburg Passages point into the open.
