Mavie Hörbiger

Mavie Hörbiger was born in Munich. She began her theatre career in 2001 at the Hanover Theatre, where she starred in Schnitzler’s Komödie der Verführung (2002), Neil LaBute’s Fat Pig (2005) and Martin Crimp’s Soft and Cruel (2006). In 2004 she played the title role in Wedekind’s Lulu (directed by Christina Paulhofer) at the Schauspielhaus in Bochum. In 2006 she moved to the Basel Theatre appearing in Rostand’s Cyrano de Bergerac, followed in 2007 by Williams’s Streetcar Named Desire and Hauptmann’s Before Sunset. In 2008 she appeared in Anna Viebrock and Malte Ubenauf’s Doubleface oder die Innenseite des Mantels and in Dennis Kelly’s Love and Money (directed by Elias Perrig).

In 2008 she worked for the first time in Vienna in Heribert Sasse’s production of Yūzō Yamamoto and Bertolt Brecht’s Die Judith von Shimoda at the Theater in der Josefstadt. Mavie Hörbiger has been a member of the ensemble at the Burgtheater in Vienna since the 2011/12 season. She has starred in Musset’s Lorenzaccio (2010), Handke and Euripides’ Helena (2010), Stephens’s Wastwater (2012), Nestroy’s Der böse Geist Lumpazivagabundus (2013), Jelinek’s Schatten (Eurydike sagt) (2013) and Chekhov’s The Seagull (2014). From 2015 she played Ismene in Jette Steckel’s production of Antigone. Other apperances include Ferdinand Schmalz’s jedermann (stirbt) (directed by Stefan Bachmann), A Midsummer Night’s Dream (directed by Leander Haußmann), Ionesco’s The Chairs (directed by Claus Peymann, Leander Haußmann) and Simon Stone’s production of Euripides’ Medea at the Burgtheater and Akademietheater. During the 2019/20 season she worked with Thorleifur Örn Arnarsson on Die Edda and with Kay Voges on Dies Irae – Tag des Zorns. She is currently appearing in Wilde’s The Importance of Being Earnest (directed by Antonio Latella) at the Akademietheater.

In addition to her theatre work, Mavie Hörbiger has also been active in film and television for many years. In 2000 she appeared in Detlev Buck’s Liebesluder, in 2001 in Hark Bohm’s television film Vera Brühne and in 2008 was involved in the ZDF production Krupp – Eine deutsche Familie. This was followed in 2011 by the role of Carolin in Matthias Schweighöfer’s film comedy What a Man, Christian Alvart’s Halbe Brüder in 2015 and Helene Hegemann’s Axolotl Overkill in 2017, which had its premiere at the Sundance Film Festival’s World Dramatic Films Competition. With Christian Alvart she appeared in the Tatort crime series episode Borowski und der coole Hund (2011) and Willkommen in Hamburg (2012), as well as in Marvin Kren’s Die letzte Wiesn in 2015.

In 2017 Sonja Maria Kröner’s Sommerhäuser and Christian Zübert’s Lommbock were released in cinemas. In 2018 she took the female lead in Max Färberböck’s Ich brauche euch. At the beginning of 2019 she appeared in Todesfrist (directed by Christopher Schier) and in March the same year Marie Kreutzer’s feature film Der Boden unter den Füßen celebrated its premiere at Diagonale Graz with Mavie Hörbiger in the role of Elise. She recently appeared in Ich und die Anderen, David Schalko’s new series for Sky.

In 2001 Mavie Hörbiger received the Golden Romy for most popular female star. In 2016 she was recognized by the German Television Academy in best supporting role category for her portrayal of Ina Sattler in Die letzte Wiesn and the same year she was nominated in the best supporting role category at the Nestroy Prize for her performance of Smeraldina in The Servant of Two Masters (directed by Christian Stückl).

Mavie Hörbiger made her debut at the Salzburg Festival in 2007 as Hermia in Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream (directed by Christian Weise). In 2018 she took on the role of Pitz alongside Samuel Finzi as Dov Grinstein in Dušan David Pařízek’s adaptation of David Grossman’s A Horse Walks into A Bar, which was also shown at the Akademietheater in Vienna from autumn 2018. From 2017 to 2020 she appeared as the Works in Michael Sturminger’s production of Jedermann. This summer she is Devil and God in the new production of Jedermann.
