The German bass-baritone Thomas Quasthoff has decided to say goodbye to the concert stage, ending an unequalled career as a singer which lasted for almost 40 years. The exceptional artist made regular appearances at the Salzburg Festival, and his decision also affects the song recital that had been planned for August 18 at the Salzburg Festival.

The new winners of the renowned Wolf Prize were announced this past week: star tenor Plácido Domingo and conductor Sir Simon Rattle will share the prize, which carries a monetary value of 100,000 dollars. The award ceremony will take place on May 1, 2012 at the Parliament of Israel and will be presided over by President Shimon Peres.

Out of 91 applicants, including 19 women, the jury of the “Nestlé and Salzburg Festival Young Conductors Award” chaired by Ingo Metzmacher has selected three conductors, two men and one woman: the 20-year-old Englishman Jamie Phillips, the 33-year-old Argentinean Christian Baldini and the 26-year-old Lithuanian Mirga Gražinytė-Tyla. The three finalists will present themselves to the public on April 28 and 29 during the Award Concert Weekend.

The Salzburg Festival is pleased that Nicolas Stemann’s nine-hour production of Faust I + II, a 2011 co-production of the Salzburg Festival and the Thalia Theater Hamburg, has been invited to this year’s Theatertreffen in Berlin (May 4-20, 2012). The piece will be revived at the Berliner Festspiele – as one of the ten most remarkable productions of the season.
