Cleopatra and the Snake

This year’s Salzburg Whitsun Festival is dominated by Queen Cleopatra. The great Russian composer Rodion Shchedrin has been commissioned to write a work about this mythical figure. His narration combines old and new elements, is inspired by Shakespeare and allows Anna Netrebko to sing in her mother tongue. The mini-opera offers a universal story, replete with grand drama and fresh text. Brigitte Kempen (Opernglas) met Rodion Shchedrin in Munich, to learn more about this upcoming world premiere.

Nestlé and Salzburg Festival Young Conductors Award 2012 - Three finalists have been announced

Out of 91 applicants, including 19 women, the jury of the “Nestlé and Salzburg Festival Young Conductors Award” chaired by Ingo Metzmacher has selected three conductors, two men and one woman: the 20-year-old Englishman Jamie Phillips, the 33-year-old Argentinean Christian Baldini and the 26-year-old Lithuanian Mirga Gražinytė-Tyla. The three finalists will present themselves to the public on April 28 and 29 during the Award Concert Weekend.

Thomas Quasthoff will return to the Salzburg Festival stage

Together with Michael Volle and Helmut Deutsch, he devotes himself to Johannes Brahms’ Die schöne Magelone as the narrator. Wonderful news: his innumerable fans will be able to attend a performance by Thomas Quasthoff at the 2012 Festival after all.

On November 11, Artistic Director Alexander Pereira and Director of Drama Sven-Eric Bechtolf unveiled the eagerly anticipated program of the next Salzburg Festival, together with President Helga Rabl-Stadler. The new artistic leadership team presents new productions of classics of opera and literature, numerous world premieres and several innovations.

Reorientation of the Nestlé and Salzburg Festival Young Conductors Award and Extension of Nestlé’s Sponsorship

Since today, October 1, 2011, Alexander Pereira is the new Artistic Director of the Salzburg Festival. At the same time, Sven-Eric Bechtolf becomes Director of Drama at the Salzburg Festival. President Helga Rabl-Stadler will continue to be responsible for the business agenda of the Festival. On November 11, the new Directorate will introduce the audience to the program of the 2012 Salzburg Festival.

On Friday, August 26, 2011, the film premiere of Scheitern, scheitern, besser scheitern! with Gert Voss and Harald Schmitt took place at DAS KINO Salzburg at 8:30 pm. After this, the character actor Gert Voss received the Kurier’s Romy Award and the Grand Decoration of Honor of the State of Salzburg.

Song Recital 4: Keenlyside replaces Quasthoff

On August 22 at 8:30 pm, the fourth song recital of this year’s Salzburg Festival takes place. Due to illness, Thomas Quasthoff has been forced to cancel his performance in Salzburg. We are very happy that Simon Keenlyside has agreed to perform the same repertoire in his stead: Franz Schubert’s Winterreise, settings of poems by Wilhelm Müller – with Pierre-Laurent Aimard at the piano.
