“To awaken the ear, the eyes, and human thought” – the Salzburg Festival is opened

This morning, the 2011 Salzburg Festival was officially opened. Federal President Heinz Fischer, Landeshauptfrau Gabi Burgstaller and Claudia Schmied, Minister for Art and Culture, attended the festive ceremony. Apart from the keynote address by Joachim Gauck and further speeches, works by Leoš Janáček, Richard Strauss and Gustav Mahler framed the Opening Ceremony.

Successful Festival Opening Party

Despite bad weather, the Festival’s fans were not discouraged from coming to the historic center of Salzburg: the Festival Opening Party attracted about 25,000 people – despite low temperatures and rain.

Elisabeth Kulman forced to cancellation due to injury

During the first scenic rehearsal for Tristan und Isolde at the RuhrTriennale in Bochum, Elisabeth Kulman suffered an accident on July 19, 2011. Elisabeth Kulman is gravely injured by the accident and deeply regrets her cancellation for this year’s Salzburg Festival. Instead of Elisabeth Kulman, Anna Larsson will perform in the Opening Concert with the Vienna Philharmonic.

“A wonderful work!!!!”

On July 28 and 31, the Vienna Philharmonic will play the first Philharmonic Concert of this year’s Salzburg Festival under the baton of Pierre Boulez. The conductor, who has enjoyed a close working relationship for almost 40 years with the orchestra, has selected a moving program centering on Gustav Mahler, whose anniversary is this year and who is at the center of the concert programming of the 2011 Festival season, with his own series, the Mahler Scenes, dedicated to him.

In conversation with Wolfgang Schaufler, Pierre Boulez recounts his earliest experiences with Mahler and his very personal approach to the work of this composer, who was so seminal for 20th century music.

„Young People“

From 2008 on, working for and with the younger generation is one of the focal points of the Salzburg Festival program. Youth camps, affordable youth tickets, student projects and accompanying events specifically aimed at younger audiences are meant to inspire and develop their joy and understanding of music. Starting right now, you also can book youth subscriptions. On the whole, 3,000 tickets for operas, plays and concerts with a price reduction up to 90% will be reserved for patrons younger than 27 (i.e., born after June 30, 1984).
