Apart from the opening of the Festival, David Afkham had another important appearance today. The young conductor presented the CD “Nestlé and Salzburg Festival Young Conductors Award 2010”, which he recorded with the Gustav Mahler Youth Orchestra, to the press at the Café UNI:VERSUM.
The Prize Winner’s Concert of the “Nestlé and Salzburg Festival Young Conductors Award” on August 14, 2010, at which David Afkham proved his outstanding talent and demonstrated how much he deserved the honor, eliciting great applause from the audience, jury and critics, is now available as a high-quality live recording on CD. David Afkham had been selected among 80 international applicants as the winner of the “Nestlé and Salzburg Festival Young Conductors Award”. The prize, which has a value of 15,000 Euros, is awarded annually to a young conductor aged 22 to 35. The goal of the “Nestlé and Salzburg Festival Young Conductors Award” is to give highly talented young conductors a decisive impulse for their career. Apart from the classical and romantic repertoire, special attention is given to the interpretation of contemporary musical works. This was also reflected by the concert’s program. Next to György Ligeti’s Atmosphères, Afkham had selected Dmitri Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 10 in E-Minor, Op. 93.
“I am pleased that not only was a well-deserving prize-winner chosen, but also about the fact that we managed to convince so many young conductors to apply for the very first ‘Nestlé and Salzburg Festival Young Conductors Award’,” Rudolf Ramsauer, Director of Corporate Communications at Nestlé S.A., commented on the decision to initiate this prize and on the immediate echo the award found.
At the Opening Ceremony of the 2011 Salzburg Festival on July 27, David Afkham conducted the Mozarteum Orchestra Salzburg, which he will also lead on June 14, 2012 at the Main Hall of the Mozarteum at a concert of the Mozarteum Foundation Salzburg. “The ‘Nestlé and Salzburg Festival Young Conductors Award’ and the concert with the Gustav Mahler Youth Orchestra connected to it certainly started a few balls rolling in my life,” Afkham summarizes, “for example being able to conduct the Opening Concert with the Mozarteumorchestra, or performing at the Mozart Week in January 2012 – those are great impulses which I am looking forward to with all my heart! But it is not only about the concerts. The award also brings a responsibility: a responsibility to keep working on myself and keep learning.”
Starting immediately, the concert recording from the Felsenreitschule, released by ORFEO International Music, may be purchased at select record stores.
The winner of this year’s “Nestlé and Salzburg Festival Young Conductors Award” will only be announced in August, and thus, concert-goers will have a surprise waiting for them: to see who will step onto the podium to conduct on August 13, 2011 at 8:00 pm at the Felsenreitschule. Tickets are available at the SHOP • KARTEN/TICKETS (Hofstallgasse 1), daily from 9:30 am to 8:00 pm. You may view the program, featuring works by Debussy, Shostakovich, Britten and Stravinsky here.
