“During the past five years as Director of Drama of the Festival, which have gone by so very quickly, Thomas Oberender has spun together various threads with sensitivity and instinct – performance venues, plays, directors, actors – spinning them into a network that was always stable, even when the curtain had come down already,” Landeshauptfrau Burgstaller said at the ceremony.
The first season which Thomas Oberender programmed at the 2007 Festival was the most heavily attended drama season of the past ten years. After that, Oberender was the top candidate for the Artistic Directorship of the Deutsches Theater in Berlin starting in 2008. He, however, preferred to fulfill his obligation to the Salzburg Festival until 2011. Starting in 2012, Oberender will be Artistic Director of the Berliner Festspiele.
Thomas Oberender, born in 1966 in Jena, has been Director of Drama of the Salzburg Festival since 2006. Before that, he was the Principal Dramaturge and member of the Artistic Directorate at the Schauspielhaus Bochum under Matthias Hartmann from 2000 to 2005; in 2005-2006 he was Chief Dramaturge and Co-Director of the Schauspielhaus in Zurich. From 1988 to 2000, Oberender lived in Berlin, where he submitted his doctoral thesis on Botho Strauß in 1999. In 1997, he co-founded and named the author’s collective Theater Neuen Typs, which was dedicated to the dissemination of new theatrical texts of German-language authors. He has written essays, theater and literature reviews and developed projects for Expo 2000, the Ruhr Triennial 2004 and the European Cultural Capital 2010.
