Mirga Gražinytė-Tyla, winner of the third annual “Nestlé and Salzburg Festival Young Conductors Award” in 2012, will conduct the Gustav Mahler Youth Orchestra at the Felsenreitschule on August 12. The 26-year-old conductor from Lithuania convinced the international jury chaired by Ingo Metzmacher in a concert with the Camerata Salzburg at the first-ever Award Concert Weekend at the Felsenreitschule at the end of April. “It was a very close call. What finally decided us was her greater determination and clarity,” said Metzmacher.
From 91 applicants, the international jury had picked three finalists (Christian Baldini, Mirga Gražinytė-Tyla and Jamie Phillips) who presented themselves to their audiences on April 28 and 29 together with three renowned orchestras at the Felsenreitschule.
“To me, it is a great joy to be the winner of the ‘Nestlé and Salzburg Festival Young Conductors Award 2012’!” the winner Mirga Gražinytė-Tyla declared euphorically. “It is a wonderful gift and a great honor to rehearse a concert with such a high-carat orchestra as the Gustav Mahler Youth Orchestra, and thus have a presence at the Salzburg Festival as a conductor – especially in my second, and most importantly, my musical homeland of Austria.”
The program of the Award Winner’s Concert:
ALFRED SCHNITTKE • Ritual
WOLFGANG A. MOZART • Concerto for Piano and Orchestra in C major KV 467
IGOR STRAVINSKY • Petrouchka
The Lithuanian pianist Andrius Zlabys will perform as soloist.
At the press conference on Saturday, the CD of the 2011 Award Winner’s Concert with Ainārs Rubiķis and the Gustav Mahler Youth Orchestra was also presented. The CD is available at our Festival Shop, our online shop and at various record stores in Austria.
Starting immediately, young conductors may apply under www.salzburgfestival.at/nestle_yca/ for the 2013 Nestlé and Salzburg Festival Young Conductors Award.
