Cecilia Bartoli, the new Artistic Director of the Whitsun Festival, chose Cleopatra, the legendary woman with a thousand faces, as the theme of her first program. On her opulent musical journey (from May 25 to 28, 2012), Cecilia Bartoli and her artistic colleagues will “seduce all your senses in four short days and just as many long nights”, “portraying the legendary Egyptian queen in various guises”.
The casts are truly exquisite: in the new production of Handel’s Giulio Cesare in Egitto, Andreas Scholl, Cecilia Bartoli, Anne-Sophie von Otter and Philippe Jaroussky will be heard. Giovanni Antonini returns to Salzburg with his Giardino Armonico for this production.
Massenet’s opera Cléopâtre will be presented in a concert performance with Sophie Koch, Ludovic Tézier and Véronique Gens. Vladimir Fedoseyev conducts the Mozarteum Orchestra Salzburg. Vesselina Kasarova and Piotr Beczala will sing works by Berlioz and Brahms under the baton of Sir John Eliot Gardiner with the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra.
On the last day of the Whitsun Festival, Anna Netrebko will perform under the baton of Valery Gergiev, presenting works by Rubinstein, Shchedrin, Gounod, Massenet and Prokofiev at the Großes Festspielhaus with the Orchestra of the Mariinsky Theater. And not least, Cecilia Bartoli presents virtuoso vocal technique in a baroque concert with Il Giardino Armonico.
The literary aspects shall not be neglected – Sven-Eric Bechtolf and Sunnyi Melles approach the phenomenon Cleopatra through a reading of Shakespeare’s Antony and Cleopatra.
You will find further information on concerts and events with the Cleopatra focus in the overall program of the Salzburg Whitsun Festival 2012, which is available here. Ticket sales runs since on June, 2011.
