Festive Opening Ceremony of the 2015 Salzburg Festival

This year, the Salzburg Festival takes place for the 95th time. Last weekend, the traditional performance of Haydn’s Die Schöpfung, part of the Ouverture spirituelle, and the premiere of Jedermann launched the festival season. The opening ceremony of the Salzburg Festival takes place at the Felsenreitschule on July 26 at 11 am. The ceremony will be attended by the Austrian President Dr. Heinz Fischer, Landeshauptmann Dr. Wilfried Haslauer, the Austrian Minister of Art and Culture, Constitution and Media Dr. Josef Ostermayer and Festival President Helga Rabl-Stadler. The keynote address will be delivered this year by Prof. Dr. Rüdiger Safranski.

Operas in Concert this Festival Summer

Divine Music in the Concert Series Ouverture spirituelle

Sacred works by Schubert, Mozart, Bach, Beethoven and Bruckner will be heard this summer as part of the concert series Ouverture spirituelle. The first performance on July 18 features Joseph Haydn’s Die Schöpfung – already an enormous triumph at its premiere in 1799.

Angela Gheorghiu and Elisabeth Kulman Replace Elīna Garanča

Unfortunately, Elīna Garanča has cancelled her appearances at the Salzburg Festival for this summer, sending the following message:
“Due to personal reasons, I much regret to withdraw from my professional activities until further notice. My mother is suffering from terminal cancer, so I will now stay by her side in Riga. I am very sorry for any inconvenience this may cause and ask for your understanding in this difficult time.”

Festival Opening Party • Celebrate with Us!

“On Saturday, July 18, at 10:15 am, the Salzburg Festival begins with a great Festival Opening Party: 73 events at 29 venues. Festival artists such as Cornelius Obonya and Julian Crouch and Festival content from Brecht to Boulez without admission. It is our intention to implement Max Reinhardt’s motto, ‘The entire city is a stage’ – celebrating the opening of the Festival summer with all citizens of Salzburg and our city’s guests,” says Festival President Helga Rabl-Stadler.

How the Swarovski crystals find their way onto the Paramour’s dress

Carefully, Nina Fahrbach picks up a sparkling crystal with her tweezers, heating it over a candle – but not too long, or soot would cling to it. Applying gentle pressure, the Swarovski crystal is finally placed on the red silk satin of the Paramour’s dress. Nina Fahrbach is a costume painter; for four days, she has already been working with Kaname Kiyono to give the dress that the Paramour wears in Hofmannsthal’s Jedermann the right sparkle. “It is almost meditative work,” says Nina Fahrbach while she heats stone by stone, placing them on the dress. Kaname Kiyono explains that there is no pattern. It is a matter of feeling which rhinestone goes where.

For the new production of “Die Eroberung von Mexico”

The team bringing Wolfgang Rihm’s opera Die Eroberung von Mexico to the Salzburg Festival stage is in the midst of its rehearsals. Therefore, it is an unusual occurrence to find Peter Konwitschny (director), Johannes Leiacker (set and costume designer), Ingo Metzmacher (music director) and Bettina Bartz (the production dramaturge) taking their seats on a podium to answer questions from journalists at such an early stage, three weeks before the premiere.
