BIOGRAPHY

Giovanni Romeo*

The Italian bass-baritone Giovanni Romeo was born in Milan in 1988 and began his vocal studies with Cristina Dominguez. His current teacher is Cristina Rubin at the Verdi Conservatory in Milan. He won the third prize in the 2011 International Ferruccio Tagliavini Singing Competition and in the 2012 ASSAMI Singing Competition in Milan. As a finalist in the 2013 International Salicedoro Singing Competition he was invited to sing Bartolo (Il barbiere di Siviglia) in Oviedo during the 2014/15 season. In the autumn of 2013 he took part in the Ópera Estudio International Opera Academy on the island of Tenerife, where he made his debut as Don Alfonso (Così fan tutte) under Carlo Goldstein, returning in April 2014 for Sancho Panza in Massenet’s Don Quichotte. In 2010 he was heard in Paisiello’s La serva padrona within the framework of Enzo Dara’s Laboratorio Teatro Musicale del Settecento at the Teatro Bibiena in Mantua, returning in 2013 for Cimarosa’s Il matrimonio segreto.
In January 2014 he sang Bartolo in in a production by the Associazione Lirica Concertistica Italiana (AsLiCo), and in 2013 he was heard in Donizetti’s Il campanello at the Teatro Olimpico in Vicenza. In 2012 he took the part of Martino in Rossini’s L’occasione fa il ladro in a production mounted by the Teatro La Fenice at the Teatro Malibran in Venice and also appeared in Respighi’s La bella dormente nel bosco at the Rimsky-Korsakov Conservatory in St Petersburg. He also took part in performances of La serva padrona and Stravinsky’s Pulcinella under Marco Pace at the International Conservatory Week Festival organized in 2011 by the Rimsky-Korsakov Conservatory in Glazunov Hall.
As a member of the Young Singers Project Giovanni Romeo will be appearing at the 2014 Salzburg Festival as Donna Magnifica in La Cenerentola for Children.
