Could you describe your orchestra’s sound quality? What makes your orchestra’s sound special?
I think of it as very comfortable plush red velvet chair. It is round, warm, and I love being a part of that sound.

To Daniel Barenboim, Pierre Boulez is not only “the most important and most interesting personality in contemporary music,” but also a friend who has accompanied the maestro’s career. At the Salzburg Festival, he and his West-Eastern Divan Orchestra will perform not only Wagner, Schoenberg, Tchaikovsky and Debussy, but also two Boulez works in the series Salzburg contemporary: sur Incises and Dérive 2. What was the most exotic or special location you have ever performed in?
The Israel Philharmonic Orchestra (IPO) has appeared literally all over the world. For me personally one of the most exotic places for us was also the least exotic place for our Music Director.  We performed in a Cricket Club in Mumbai in the rain. The occasion was the 100th anniversary of Mehli Mehta's birth. The irony was that the people who had purchased the most expensive seats were the ones who were getting wet, although many of them had someone holding an umbrella over their heads throughout the concert! The soloist was Placido Domingo, and he got quite wet as well!

Designing a concert programme is like weaving. Like a textile’s warp, there are given constants that create structure. In our case, these are the traditional series featuring the Vienna Philharmonic, the series of guest orchestras, Salzburg’s Mozarteum Orchestra, the Salzburg Camerata, great soloists and song recitalists of our times, intriguing chamber music formations and the most interesting performers of New Music – every year, we weave all of these into new patterns with other weft threads. Many of these threads take their origin in the Ouverture spirituelle and give rise to other series in their own right.
