Agostino Cavalca

Costume designer Agostino Cavalca hails from Italy but has lived in Paris since 1980. In the spoken theatre he has designed the costumes for many classic plays, including works by Euripides, Shakespeare, Molière, Racine, Corneille, Marivaux and Goethe, as well as plays by living writers. Operas for which he has designed the costumes include Die Dreigroschenoper, Janá?ek’s Diary of One Who Disappeared, Weber’s Euryanthe and Rossini’s Le Comte Ory in Aix-en-Provence and Luisa Miller in Montpellier. Since 1995 he has worked on a regular basis with Moshe Leiser and Patrice Caurier, notably for Scottish Opera (La Belle Hélène), Opera North (A Midsummer Night’s Dream), the Royal Opera House in London (La Cenerentola, Il turco in Italia, Il barbiere di Siviglia, Madama Butterfly, Hänsel und Greteland Maria Stuarda), the Mariinsky Theatre in St Petersburg (Eugene Onegin), the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées in Paris (Leonore, Fidelioand Gluck’s La clemenza di Tito), the Opéra de Lyon (Lucie de Lammermoor), the Angers Nantes Opéra (Falstaff, Jen?fa, The Makropulos Case, Die Zauberflöte, Don Giovanni, Le nozze di Figaro and L’incoronazione di Poppea), the Welsh National Opera (Carmen, La traviata, Orphée et Eurydice, Mazeppa and Die lustige Witwe), the Grand Théâtre de Genève (Hamlet, Betrothal in a Monastery, Der Rosenkavalier, Pelléas et Mélisande, Der Ring des Nibelungen and Don Carlo), Lausanne (The Nose, Aufstieg und Fall der Stadt Mahagonny and Die Fledermaus), Basel (L’Amour des trois oranges), Zurich (Halévy’s Clari, Marc-André Dalbavie’s Gesualdo and Rossini’s Mosè in Egitto, Le Comte Ory and Otello), Copenhagen (Il turco in Italia), the Salzburg Festival (Giulio Cesare, Norma and Iphigénie en Tauride), Barcelona (Madama Butterfly and Maria Stuarda), the Bregenz Festival (Detlev Glanert’s Solaris), the Metropolitan Opera (Hamlet), the Vienna State Opera (Die Zauberflöte), the Theater an der Wien (Paisiello’s Il barbiere di Siviglia), La Scala, Milan (Giovanna d’Arco) and the Aalto Theatre in Essen (Il trovatore).
