Aleix Martínez

Aleix Martínez studied in his native city of Barcelona and in Marseille. After winning the Prix de Lausanne in 2008, he completed his education at the Ballet School of the Hamburg Ballet. He became a member of the company in 2010, and was promoted to soloist in 2014 and to principal in 2021.

John Neumeier has created roles for him that include Levin in Anna Karenina, Louis in Liliom, HE in Dona Nobis Pacem, and solo roles in Purgatorio, Beethoven Project I and II and Ghost Light. His repertory also includes principal and leading roles in Neumeier’s Winterreise, Messiah, Nijinsky, The Nutcracker and Christmas Oratorio I–VI, as well as in Christopher Wheeldon’s The Winter’s Tale, Jerome Robbins’s Dances at a Gathering and Rudolf Nureyev’s Don Quixote.

In 2008 he won the Premio Positano Léonide Massine and in 2013 he was awarded the Dr Wilhelm Oberdörffer Prize. In 2012 he was named ‘Bearer of Hope for the Future’ by the magazine tanz.

Alongside his dance career Aleix Martínez works regularly as a choreographer. He represented the Hamburg Ballet at the International Draft Works in London in 2019, and has created many works for various festivals and for the Young Choreographer series. Together with Edvin Revazov and Marc Jubete he created the ballet evening Shakespeare – Sonnets for the Hamburg Ballet, which opened the 45th Hamburg Ballet Days in 2019. Aleix Martínez is the founder of the arts platform ManNera.
