Alexander Bauer studied organ and composition at the Mozarteum University Salzburg. He has won much acclaim for his organ playing, including two first prizes (2006 and 2009) at the Jugend Musiziert competition, and in 2006 the special prize of the Deutsche Stiftung Musikleben, along with a scholarship from the Jürgen Ponto Foundation. He also participated successfully in the Heidelberg Organ Competition for Young Organists and the Quimby Organ Competition. As an ensemble musician, Alexander Bauer is active in NAMES and œnm – œsterreichisches ensemble für neue musik. Concert engagements have taken him to Germany and neighbouring countries.
His compositions range from pieces for solo instruments to larger-scale ensemble works, and also include electroacoustic compositions, multimedia projects and music for the stage. He is a two-time finalist of the Ö1 Talentebörse Composition Prize (2016 and 2020) and his works have already been performed at several international festivals, including as part of the Young Directors Project 2014 at the Salzburg Festival (36566 Tage), and at the Glasgow International Festival, the Salzburg Biennale, Salzburg’s Dialoge Festival and stART Festival, Zeitimpuls Innsbruck and the Centre for Art and Media in Karlsruhe. Renowned ensembles who have regularly commissioned works from him include œnm, Ensemble NeuRaum, the Platypus Ensemble, NAMES, ensemble chromoson and the Schallfeld Ensemble.
In 2020 Alexander Bauer was awarded an annual music scholarship from the state of Salzburg. Since 2022 he has taught electronic composition at the Nuremberg University of Music.
