Antonio Cuenca Ruiz studied performing arts at the École normale supérieure de Lyon. From 2014 to 2019 he was a dramaturg at La Monnaie in Brussels. He has a longstanding collaboration with the director Peter Sellars, with whom he has worked on productions of La clemenza di Tito and Idomeneo at the Salzburg Festival, Claude Vivier’s Kopernikus — A Ritual Opera of Death at the Festival d’Automne in Paris, the theatre show Roman de Fauvel at the Théâtre du Châtelet, Charpentier’s Médée at the Berlin State Opera and Beatrice di Tenda at the Paris Opéra.
Recent productions on which he has worked as a dramaturg include Prokofiev’s The Fiery Angel directed by Andrea Breth at the Theater an der Wien, L’incoronazione di Poppea directed by Ted Huffman at the Festival d’Aix-en-Provence, Silvia Costa’s production L’Autre Voyage with music by Franz Schubert at the Opéra Comique and Lisenka Heijboer Castañón’s production of John Adams’s The Gospel According to the Other Mary at the Vienna Volksoper.
In 2020 at the Opéra de Lille he devised ‘Les Quotidiennes’, a series of short performances of little-known works by 17th-century French authors. As a member of the Atelier de la Fémis he is currently writing Clairières dans le ciel, a screenplay inspired by the songs of the composer Lili Boulanger.
