Benjamin Chamandy

Since the start of the 2023/24 season the bass-baritone Benjamin Chamandy has been a member of the ensemble of the Tyrol Landestheater in Innsbruck, where he recently made his debut as Figaro in Mozart’s Le nozze di Figaro. From 2021 to 2023 he was a member of the International Opera Studio of the Berlin State Opera, where his appearances included Monteverdi’s L’incoronazione di Poppea, Tisiphone in Rameau’s Hippolyte et Aricie, Second Armed Man in Mozart’s Die Zauberflöte, Second Philistine in Saint-Saëns’ Samson et Dalila, Sacristan in Puccini’s Tosca, José Castro in La fanciulla del West and roles in Verdi’s Rigoletto and Strauss’s Ariadne auf Naxos and Der Rosenkavalier, as well as in contemporary works such as Jobst Liebrecht’s chamber version of Henze’s La piccolo Cubana and Peter Eötvös’s commissioned work Sleepless. In 2024 he returned to Berlin as Baron Douphol in performances of La traviata.

In 2023 Benjamin Chamandy sang the role of Job’s son Jonas in the world premiere of Bernhard Lang’s Hiob at the Stadttheater Klagenfurt. In 2019 he performed the role of Wagner in Gounod’s Faust at the Vienna Kammeroper and appeared as Papageno in the children’s opera Papagena jagt die Fledermaus at the Theater an der Wien. In 2018 he performed the title role of Gottfried von Einem’s Tulifant in the concert hall of the Vienna Boys Choir and at Schloss Esterházy. In the same year he made his Salzburg Festival debut in Henze’s The Bassarids.

He has worked under well-known conductors such as Thomas Guggeis, Antonello Manacorda, Kent Nagano, Andrés Orozco-Estrada, Simon Rattle, Jean-Christophe Spinosi, Simone Young and Massimo Zanetti.

Benjamin Chamandy was born in Toronto and grew up in Innsbruck. He was a member of the Wilten Boys Choir. He began his singing training in Innsbruck and graduated from the University of Music and Performing Arts in Vienna. From 2021 to 2023 he held a scholarship from the Liz Mohn Culture and Music Foundation.
