Carrie-Ann Matheson

Canadian pianist, conductor and educator Carrie-Ann Matheson began her career at the Metropolitan Opera, New York, where she was employed as an assistant conductor, prompter and pianist. In 2015 she joined the Zurich Opera thanks to the invitation of general music director Fabio Luisi. She is in demand as a song and recital accompanist and has worked with many internationally renowned singers, including Rolando Villazón, Jonas Kaufmann, Piotr Beczala, Benjamin Bernheim, Diana Damrau, Barbara Bonney and Joyce DiDonato.

Her appearances during the 2020/21 season include recitals with Joyce DiDonato at the Summer Festival of San Lorenzo de El Escorial, the Festival de Santander and as part of the Met’s new online recital series and with Benjamin Bernheim at the Salzburg Festival, the Festival de Paris and the Philharmonie de Luxembourg, as well as with Pene Pati at the Salle Gaveau in Paris and the Opéra national de Bordeaux.

Carrie-Ann Matheson has appeared as a chamber musician with members of the New York Philharmonic, the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra, the Cleveland Orchestra, the Chamber Orchestra of Europe, the Orchestre symphonique de Montréal and the Philharmonia Zurich. She assisted such important conductors as James Levine, Fabio Luisi, Daniel Barenboim, Yannick Nézet-Séguin and Gianandrea Noseda before making her conducting debut at the Zurich Opera in 2015, where she has conducted works such as La finta giardiniera, Don Pasquale and Iphigénie en Tauride. Other engagements have led her to prominent festivals including the Salzburg Festival and the Seiji Ozawa Matsumoto Festival.
Carrie-Ann Matheson is passionate about young opera singers and works with the artists of the Lindemann Young Artist Development Program at the Met, the International Opera Studio at the Zurich Opera, the Ryan Opera Center at the Lyric Opera of Chicago, the Music Academy of the West, the Aspen Music Festival, the International Vocal Arts Institute and the Atkins Young Artist Programme at the Mariinsky Theatre. She also coaches young singers at her private studio.

Carrie-Ann Matheson studied at the University of Prince Edward Island and the Cleveland Institute of Music before graduating from the Manhattan School of Music with a diploma in vocal accompaniment.
