Daniel Behle

The tenor and composer Daniel Behle was named OPUS Klassik Singer of the Year in 2020 for his aria album MoZart. He is equally acclaimed in concerts, song recitals and as an opera singer, performing a repertory that stretches from the Baroque to contemporary works. In 2024 he was awarded the German Record Critics’ Honorary Award in the Classical category.

Highlights of the 2023/24 season on the concert platform have included Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony with the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra, Schoenberg’s Die Jakobsleiter with the Berlin Philharmonic under Kirill Petrenko and Beethoven’s Missa solemnis in Aix-en-Provence and at the Philharmonie de Paris. Prior to his appearances as Tito (La clemenza di Tito) at the Salzburg Whitsun Festival, he has appeared on the opera stage as Lohengrin at the Dutch National Opera in Amsterdam and as Belmonte (Die Entführung aus dem Serail) at La Scala, Milan, and the Vienna State Opera. In June and July 2024 he sings the role of Ferrando (Così fan tutte) at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden.

In the 2021/22 and 2022/23 seasons Daniel Behle’s concert appearances included Mahler’s Das Lied von der Erde in Lucerne, Mendelssohn’s Elijah with the Berlin Philharmonic and Britten’s War Requiem at the Vienna Musikverein, where he also gave a song recital. He also appeared at the Alte Oper Frankfurt, the Stuttgart Liederhalle, the Elbphilharmonie in Hamburg and on tour with the quartet German Hornsound. Opera engagements took him to the Semperoper Dresden (Das Rheingold, Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg), Dortmund Opera (Lohengrin), the Bavarian State Opera (Giuditta, Die schweigsame Frau), the Zurich Opera House (Die Entführung aus dem Serail), the Dutch National Opera (Königskinder), the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden (Die Zauberflöte) and the Vienna State Opera (Die Entführung aus dem Serail). He sang Alessandro in concert performances of Mozart’s Il re pastore at the 2023 Salzburg Festival.

Daniel Behle appears regularly in concert with renowned orchestras such as the Sächsische Staatskapelle Dresden, the Berlin and Vienna Philharmonics, the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra and the Orchestra dell’Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia, working with conductors such as Stefan Asbury, Bertrand de Billy, Semyon Bychkov, Christoph Eschenbach, James Gaffigan, Hartmut Haenchen, Thomas Hengelbrock, Pablo Heras-Casado, Marek Janowski, Philippe Jordan, Fabio Luisi, Ingo Metzmacher, Kent Nagano, Yannick Nézet-Séguin, Jérémie Rhorer, Andreas Spering, Christian Thielemann and Franz Welser-Möst.

Important opera engagements in recent years have taken him to Covent Garden (Così fan tutte, Don Giovanni), Stuttgart (Der Freischütz, Lohengrin), Zurich (Die Entführung aus dem Serail, Arabella), the Bavarian State Opera (Arabella, Giuditta) and the Bayreuth Festival (Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg, Tannhäuser).

Daniel Behle has received several awards for his recordings, which include numerous solo albums. His second Richard Strauss album, Un-erhört (2021), with the pianist Oliver Schnyder, received the German Record Critics’ Award.

As a composer, Daniel Behle most recently attracted attention with his first operetta Hopfen und Malz, which has already been staged by three opera houses in 2023.
