Denis Guéguin
video artist

The video artist Denis Guéguin was born in Paris, where he studied film and theatre. He participated regularly in a number of video festivals and created numerous experimental videos and films, which include Souvenir l’œil, Miroirs obscurs, L’Accouplement des licornes and Krystian Lupa, les acteurs et leur rêve.
He has a longstanding working partnership with the director Krzysztof Warlikowski, with whom he has worked on numerous theatre and opera productions since 2003. He has created video designs for theatre productions including A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Macbeth, Madame de Sade, Un tramway (after Tennessee Williams’s A Streetcar Named Desire), Koniec (The End) and Les Français and Phèdres(s). In opera, he has worked at venues such as the Berlin State Opera (The Rake’s Progress), the Teatr Wielki in Warsaw (Penderecki’s Ubu Rex), the Teatro Real in Madrid (Poppea e Nerone and Alceste), La Monnaie in Brussels (Médée, Macbeth, Lulu, Don Giovanni), the Bavarian State Opera in Munich (Die Frau ohne Schatten and Die Gezeichneten), the Festival d’Aix-en-Provence (Il trionfo del Tempo e del Disinganno), the Dutch National Opera in Amsterdam (Wozzeck), the Ruhrtriennale (Pelléas et Mélisande), the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden (From the House of the Dead), the Salzburg Festival (The Bassarids) and the Paris Opéra (Iphigénie en Tauride, The Makropulos Affair, Parsifal, Król Roger, Bluebeard’s Castle / La Voix humaine, Don Carlos, Lady Macbeth of the Mtsensk District and Hamlet).
In addition, he has created videos for works such as Paweł Mykietyn’s Third Symphony, Weill’s The Seven Deadly Sins and Brahms’s Liebeslieder-Walzer, and for a concert of Strauss’s Metamorphosen and Poulenc’s La Voix humaine with Barbara Hannigan. In 2022 he devised the recital evening Nocturne, video en-chantée with the Académie of the Paris Opéra. In 2016 Alternatives théâtrales published his book L’Art video à l’opéra, which consists of interviews and photographs relating to his work with Warlikowski.
He regularly gives workshops on video art at the École Nationale Supérieure des Arts et Techniques du Théâtre (Ensatt) in Lyon.
