Emilio Pomàrico

Italian conductor and composer Emilio Pomàrico was born in Buenos Aires. He is one of today’s leading interpreters of contemporary music. He is a regular guest at renowned international festivals, as well as in the world’s most important opera houses and concert halls.

Since the start of his conducting career, he has worked tirelessly to establish the work of young composers. He has also formed lasting artistic collaborations with some of the most important composers of our time, including Georges Aperghis, Luciano Berio, Friedrich Cerha, Elliott Carter, Niccolò Castiglioni, Franco Donatoni, Hugues Dufourt, Brian Ferneyhough, Gérard Grisey, Georg Friedrich Haas, Helmut Lachenmann, Luigi Nono, Emmanuel Nunes, Wolfgang Rihm, Salvatore Sciarrino, Iannis Xenakis and Hans Zender. He recently conducted the world premiere of Aperghis’s Migrants with Ensemble Resonanz at MaerzMusik in Berlin.

Emilio Pomàrico was conductor in residence with Ensemble Resonanz in Hamburg from 2017 to 2018 and they inaugurated the Recital Hall at the Elbphilharmonie in January 2017 with a programme that included the premiere of Haas’s Release, as well as works by Berg and Bartók.

Other engagements include appearances with the German Radio Philharmonic Saarbrücken Kaiserslautern, the SWR Symphony Orchestra, the WDR Symphony Orchestra, the Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France and the Gürzenich Orchestra in Cologne. He also performs regularly with Collegium Novum Zürich, Ensemble Musikfabrik, Ensemble Resonanz, Ensemble Contrechamps and the Remix Ensemble.

Emilio Pomàrico has conducted operatic productions in Dijon, including Wozzeck in 2015 as well as the world premiere of Brice Pauset’s Les Châtiments in 2020, and at the Festival d’Aix-en-Provence and the Avignon Festival. He also conducted Robert Wilson’s 2013 production of Helmut Lachenmann’s Das Mädchen mit den Schwefelhölzern and Romeo Castellucci’s 2014 production of Morton Feldman’s Neither at the Ruhrtriennale Festival. His most recent operatic projects include the critically acclaimed premiere of Philippe Boesmans’s Pinocchio in Aix, Christian Spuck’s new ballet production of Zender’s Winterreise at the Zurich Opera and the premiere of Francesco Filidei’s L’Inondation with the Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France in a production by Joël Pommerat at the Opéra Comique in Paris.

His future plans include Philippe Quesne’s staging of Mahler’s Das Lied von der Erde in Vienna, Hamburg and Lille, Bernhard Lang’s new opera Playing Trump at the Hamburg State Opera and a new production of Philippe Boesmans’s Julie at the Opéra national de Lorraine in Nancy and the Opéra de Dijon.

Emilio Pomàrico has made a number of CD recordings for labels such as Neos, Wergo, Kairos and ECM Records.
