Florian Sempey

The French baritone Florian Sempey is much sought after as a performer at the leading international opera houses. His engagements have taken him to venues such as the Opéra and the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées in Paris, the Royal Opera, Covent Garden, the Teatro dell’Opera in Rome, the Teatro Real in Madrid and the New National Theatre in Tokyo. On the concert platform he has performed with prestigious orchestras such as the Vienna Symphony Orchestra, the Berlin Philharmonic and the Orchestre National de France, in a wide-ranging repertory reaching from Handel’s cantata Apollo e Dafne to Mahler’s Lieder eines fahrenden Gesellen. In 2022 he was awarded the title of Chevalier des Arts et des Lettres by the French Ministry of Culture in recognition of his achievements in opera.

In the 2025/26 season, prior to his Salzburg debut as Don Profondo (Il viaggio a Reims) at the Whitsun Festival, Florian Sempey has sung his first Verdi role — Ford (Falstaff) — at the Opéra de Marseille, made his debut at the Palau de les Arts Reina Sofía in Valencia as Valentin in a new production of Faust and also appeared in this role in a new production at the Bavarian State Opera and in his debut at the Amsterdam Concertgebouw. Concert appearances have included his first appearance in the role of Joseph in Berlioz’s L’Enfance du Christ, with the Choir and Orchestra of the Stichting Omroep Muziek in Utrecht.

In the 2024/25 season Florian Sempey made his role and house debut as Marcello (La bohème) at the Opéra de Monte-Carlo, where he returned for a double-bill of L’Enfant et les Sortilèges and L’Heure espagnole. He also made his house debuts at the Zurich Opera House as Malatesta (Don Pasquale) and at the Santa Fe Opera as Count Almaviva (Le nozze di Figaro) and returned to the Paris Opéra as Valentin, to the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées as Don Giovanni, to the Festival d’Aix-en-Provence as Zurga (Les Pêcheurs de perles) and to the Opéra de Lyon as Prosdocimo (Il turco in Italia). In concert he appeared as Albert (Werther) with the Orchestre de Chambre de Genève and in Fauré’s Requiem with the Orchestre national du Capitole de Toulouse.

Florian Sempey studied at the conservatory in Libourne and from 2007 with Maryse Castets at the conservatory in Bordeaux. The following year he won the opera first prize and the audience prize in the Amis du Grand Théâtre singing competition of the Opéra National de Bordeaux. He made his stage debut at this opera house at the age of 21 as Papageno (Die Zauberflöte), and from 2010 spent two years as a member of the Atelier Lyrique of the Paris Opéra. In 2012 he received the prestigious Prix Carpeaux.
