Franco Fagioli

Franco Fagioli is the leading virtuoso countertenor of our time and the first to sign an exclusive contract with Deutsche Grammophon. Rossini, his solo debut recording for the company, with Armonia Atenea and George Petrou, was released in 2016, followed by an album of Handel arias with Il pomo d’oro in January 2018.

Highlights of the 2017/18 season included his debut at La Scala, Milan as Andronico (Tamerlano) and at the Dutch National Opera in the title role in Cavalli’s Eliogabalo. He also toured with the Basel Chamber Orchestra, Il pomo d’oro and the Venice Baroque Orchestra.

During the 2018/19 season Franco Fagioli sang the title role in Serse in Karlsruhe, as well as on a European tour with Il pomo d’oro. He also tours Asia with the Venice Baroque Orchestra, made his debut at the Hamburg State Opera as Ruggiero (Alcina) and makes his debut at the Bavarian State Opera as Nerone in a new production of Agrippina.

Other operatic appearances include the title role in Eliogabalo at the Paris Opéra, Arsace (Semiramide) at the Opéra national de Lorraine, Idamante (Idomeneo) at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, Piacere (Il trionfo del Tempo e del Disinganno) at the Festival d’Aix-en-Provence, the Opéra de Lille and the Théâtre de Caen and the title role in Handel’s Giulio Cesare at the Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires and the Zurich Opera.

His future plans include returning to Covent Garden and the Dutch National Opera. He will also make his debut at San Francisco Opera in Partenope and at the Teatro Real, Madrid.

In addition to his operatic appearances, Franco Fagioli has achieved great distinction as a concert artist, appearing at the Halle, Ludwigsburg, Innsbruck and Salzburg Festivals and collaborating regularly with such conductors as Rinaldo Alessandrini, Alan Curtis, Gabriel Garrido, Nikolaus Harnoncourt, René Jacobs, Marc Minkowski, Riccardo Muti and Christophe Rousset.

His impressive discography includes the title roles in Gluck’s Orfeo ed Euridice and Ezio, Pergolesi’s Adriano in Siria, Handel’s Berenice and Teseo, Leonardo Vinci’s Artaserse and Catone in Utica, Caldara’s La concordia de’ pianeti, Hasse’s Siroe, re di Persia and the solo albums Arias for Caffarelli and Il maestro Porpora.
