Gregor A. Mayrhofer

Munich-born Gregor A. Mayrhofer is becoming equally recognised as a composer and conductor who enjoys using both platforms to explore new ways of creating different forms of art.

Highlights of the 2021/22 season included his conducting debuts with musicAeterna at the Zaryadye Hall in Moscow, Britten Sinfonia at the Aldeburgh Festival, and Musikkollegium Winterthur with his Insect Concerto. He returned to SWR Symphony Orchestra, Bamberg Symphony, and Het Collectief at Tivoli Vredenburg, Utrecht. He also returned to the Filmorchester Babelsberg conducting the film score to Jim Knopf in Berlin.

In February 2022, Gregor A. Mayrhofer premiered his Recycling Concerto written for percussionist Vivi Vassileva with Württembergische Philharmonie and this autumn he is going to present it at the Klangspuren Festival in Schwaz. The Songs he wrote for Julian Prégardien, Martin Helmchen and Elisabeth Hecker were premiered in Aschaffenburg and Schwetzingen. The Asasello Quartett is going to perform the world premiere of his new String Quartet commissioned by the Bavarian Academy of the Arts.

Previously Gregor A. Mayrhofer has received commissions from the Bavarian State Opera, Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra, Biennale Munich, Deutsche Oper Berlin, the Ensemble intercontemporain, Hanover State Opera, the Tyrolean Festival Erl and the Scharoun Ensemble of the Berlin Philharmonic.

Gregor A. Mayrhofer has conducted the Bavarian State Orchestra, SWR Symphony Orchestra, Lucerne Festival Academy Orchestra, Munich Chamber Orchestra, Munich Symphony Orchestra, Staatsphilharmonie Rheinland-Pfalz and Slovenian Philharmonic Orchestra. He has worked with ensembles such Hong Kong New Music Ensemble, Ensemble Ascolta, Ensemble Modern Academy, Ensemble Nostri Temporis and the Scharoun Ensemble of the Berlin Philharmonic, as well as with soloists such as Patricia Kopatchinskaja, Georg Nigl and Daniil Trifonov. He assisted Simon Rattle for a production of Tristan und Isolde with the London Symphony Orchestra at Aix-en- Provence Festival. Previously he assisted Kirill Petrenko, Teodor Currentzis, and Michael Boder at the Vienna State Opera, as well as Matthias Pintscher at the Berlin State Opera. In 2016, he made his debut at the Philharmonie de Paris with the Ensemble intercontemporain. In 2017, he conducted premiere performances of his commission for the Ensemble intercontemporain in the Cologne Philharmonie.

He studied composition and conducting at the Munich Hochschule für Musik und Theater, the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique Paris and at the Robert Schumann Hochschule Düsseldorf. He graduated from the Juilliard School where he studied conducting with Alan Gilbert.

He regularly performs as a pianist in jazz concerts with his brother Raphael as part of their duo Imbrothersation.
