London-born baritone Ivan Ludlow studied at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama and received his stage training at the National Opera Studio. He made his operatic debut at the Italian Batignano Festival and appeared as Tchaikovsky’s Eugene Onegin at the Buxton
Festival. He has since appeared at many major European opera houses: at the Opéra National de Bordeaux he sang Escamillo in Peter Brook’s adaptation of Bizet’s Carmen, at the Opéra Comique in Paris he took on Danilo in Lehár’s Merry Widow; the Opéra de Lyon engaged him as Demetrius in Britten’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream, the Théâtre du Capitole de Toulouse for a production of Monteverdi’s Poppea under the baton of Christophe Rousset.

He is well renowned as an interpreter of modern and contemporary music. In the summer of 2013, Iwan Ludlow performed the role of Agravain in Harrison Birtwistle’s Gawain at the Salzburg Festival and interpreted Heinz Holliger’s vocal cycle Lunea in Portugal in 2016.
There he also took part in the world premiere of Francesco Filidei’s opera Giordano Bruno, which was subsequently performed at the Piccolo Teatro Milan, in Strasbourg, Paris and Reggio Emilia.

In 2017, he made his debut as Tierbändiger/Athlet in a new production Lulu at Hamburg State Opera, staged by Christoph Marthaler and conducted by Kent Nagano. He sang in the world premiere of Heinz Holliger’s opera Lunea at Zurich Opera in 2021 and created the role
of Antiochus in the world premiere of Michael Jarrell’s Bérénice at Opéra de Paris. He made his debut as Duke of Albany in Christoph Marthaler’s production of Aribert Reimann’s Lear at the Munich State Opera in 2021 and sang the title role in a production of Rihm’s Jakob Lenz at Theater Klagenfurt. 2023 he returned to Oper Zurich in as King Edward II. in George Benjamin’s Lessons of Love and Violence.

Concert engagements led Ivan Ludlow to the Lucerne Festival, the Festival dei Due Mondi in Spoleto and the Casa da Música in Porto, among others. He is a passionate lieder singer and is one of the founding members of the London Bridge Ensemble.

Ivan Ludlow’s CD recordings include Poulenc’s complete songs with Graham Johnson (Hyperion) and Henrik Hallstenius’ Ophelia: death by water singing (LAWO classics), works by Fauré and Schumann (sonimage) and songs by Frank Bridge (Dutton) with the London Bridge Ensemble.
