Kresimir Spicer

Kresimir Spicer celebrated his international breakthrough in 2000 when he appeared in the title role in Monteverdi’s Il ritorno d’Ulisse in patria at the Festival d’Aix-en-Provence under William Christie. Born in Slavonski Brod in Croatia, he has since appeared as Ulisse at leading opera houses in Paris, Bordeaux, London, New York, Frankfurt and Geneva, as well as at the Berlin State Opera under René Jacobs and at the Vienna Festival and the Innsbruck Festival of Early Music.

Kresimir Spicer’s other appearances include Tempo (Il trionfo del Tempo e del Disinganno) with Marc Minkowski and Salieri’s La grotta di Trofonio at the Zurich Opera, the Fisherman (Le Rossignol) and the title role in Oedipus Rex at the Opéra national du Rhin in Strasbourg, the title role in Haydn’s Orlando paladino at the Théâtre du Châtelet in Paris and Enea (Cavalli’s La Didone) with William Christie at the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées. He sang the role of Joabel (Charpentier’s David et Jonathas) in Aix and at the Edinburgh Festival, as well as at the Opéra Comique and in New York. He previously appeared at the Salzburg Festival in 2003 as Da-ud (Die ägyptische Helena) and in 2006 as Alessandro (Il re pastore) with Thomas Hengelbrock, with whom he also sang the role of Aeneas (Dido and Aeneas) at the Baden-Baden Whitsun Festival.

Kresimir Spicer is a regular guest at Opera Atelier in Toronto, where his roles include Oreste (Iphigénie en Tauride) and Max (Der Freischütz), as well as the title roles in Monteverdi’s Orfeo and Mozart’s La clemenza di Tito, Lucio Silla and Idomeneo. He also appeared as Idomeneo to great acclaim in Lille in 2015 and as Lucio Silla at La Scala, Milan in 2016. Other roles in Milan include Valzacchi (Der Rosenkavalier), Don Basilio (Le nozze di Figaro), Bajazet (Tamerlano), Don Anchise (La finta giardiniera) and Scaramuccio (Ariadne auf Naxos).

Further recent engagements include Septimius (Theodora) in Paris, New York and Amsterdam, the title role in Berio’s Orfeo at the Philharmonie in Paris and Dr Blind in a concert performance of Die Fledermaus at the Elbphilharmonie in Hamburg.

Kresimir Spicer will sing the role of Adam in Alessandro Scarlatti’s Cain, overo Il primo omicidio under Philippe Jaroussky in Montpellier, as well as in Salzburg.
