Since the start of the 2024/25 season the young bass Manuel Winckhler has been a member of the International Opera Studio of the Berlin State Opera, where he has already appeared as High Priest (Nabucco), One-Armed Brother (Die Frau ohne Schatten), the Duke of Verona (Roméo et Juliette), Second Armed Man (Die Zauberflöte) and Second Grail Knight (Parsifal). His other recent appearances have included a return to the Opera Ballet Vlaanderen in 2025 to sing Hermit (Der Freischütz).

He made his stage debut in 2022 in Krenek’s Jonny spielt auf at the Staatstheater am Gärtnerplatz in Munich. Guest engagements since then have included Lycomedes in Wolfgang-Andreas Schultz’s Achill unter den Mädchen at the Prinzregententheater in Munich, Osmin (Die Entführung aus dem Serail) at the Munich Chamber Opera, Sarastro (Die Zauberflöte) at the Baden State Theatre in Karlsruhe, Hermit (Der Freischütz) at the Opera Ballet Vlaanderen in Antwerp and performances as a member of the Young Singers Project at the 2024 Salzburg Festival.

He has appeared with orchestras including the Antwerp Symphony Orchestra, the Collegium Vocale Gent, the Munich Philharmonic and the Deutsche Radio Philharmonie Saarbrücken Kaiserslautern, and has worked with conductors including Bertrand de Billy, Georg Fritzsch, Philippe Herreweghe, Philippe Jordan, Zubin Mehta, Alejo Pérez, Johanna Soller, Constantin Trinks and Jordi Savall.

His concert repertory includes Bach’s Passions, Mozart’s Requiem, Brahms’s Ein deutsches Requiem, Haydn’s The Creation and Bruckner’s Te Deum.

Manuel Winckhler was born in Munich and studied at the Mozarteum University in Salzburg with Andreas Macco und Fenna Kügel-Seifried and at the University of Music and Theatre in Munich with Lars Woldt. He has also received artistic instruction from Ian Bostridge, Hedwig Fassbender, Christian Gerhaher, Malcolm Martineau, Camilla Nylund, Elena Pankratova and Michelle Wegwart.

At the German national competition Bundeswettbewerb Gesang 2024 in Berlin he won first prize in the opera/operetta category. He holds a scholarship from the Richard Wagner Association Munich.
