Marianne Beate Kielland

Marianne Beate Kielland has established herself as one of the leading singers of our time. The versatile mezzo-soprano is one of only a few Scandinavian artists who has received a Grammy nomination.
She performs regularly with orchestras such as the Antwerp Symphony Orchestra, the Belgian National Orchestra, the Budapest Festival Orchestra, the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra, the Gulbenkian Orchestra, the Norwegian Radio Orchestra, the Oslo Philharmonic, the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra and the Vienna Symphony Orchestra, and works with conductors including Fabio Biondi, Herbert Blomstedt, Michel Corboz, Thomas Dausgaard, John Fiore, Philippe Herreweghe, Manfred Honeck, Fabio Luisi, Marc Minkowski, Vasily Petrenko, Daniel Reuss, André de Ridder, Jukka-Pekka Saraste, Thomas Søndergård and Robin Ticciati. Her repertoire extends from the early 17th century through to the Classical and Romantic periods and on to contemporary compositions. In 2017 she sang Fricka in Wagner’s Das Rheingold for the first time, at the Kulturwald Festival.
The 2021/22 season began for Marianne Beate Kielland with a production of Monteverdi’s L’Orfeo at the Opéra Comique in Paris under the baton of Jordi Savall. Concerts with Andreas Spering at the Tchaikovsky Concert Hall (with Musica Viva Chamber Orchestra), with Nathalie Stutzmann and the Kristiansand Symphony Orchestra and with Jérémie Rhorer and Le Cercle de l’Harmonie followed. She also appeared with the Freiburg Baroque Orchestra under René Jacobs in Antonio Caldara’s Maddalena ai piedi di Cristo.
The 2022/23 season will begin with an opera production at the New National Theatre in Tokyo, where she will sing the title role in Handel’s Giulio Cesare under the baton of Rinaldo Alessandrini.
Marianne Beate Kielland has recorded more than fifty albums. In 2012 she was nominated for a Grammy Award in the category Best Classical Vocal Solo for her album Veslemøy synsk featuring works by Edvard Grieg and Olav Anton Thommessen. Her more recent recording Lamento, of Italian Baroque music from the 17th century, performed with Oslo Circles, was released in June 2022.
As a recitalist she works regularly with the pianist Nils Anders Mortensen. The duo were guest artists at the Cologne Philharmonie during the 2021/22 season.
