Mathias Vidal

Mathias Vidal studied Musicology at the University of Nice and singing with Christiane Patard, and at the Paris Conservatoire, from where he graduated in 2003.
He has received particular praise for his performances in baroque repertoire, including roles in operas by Monteverdi, Purcell, Rameau, Lully, Cavalli, Campra and Boismortier.

He has also taken part in many French comic operas and operettas, including Orphée aux enfers, La Vie parisienne, La Périchole, Fra Diavolo, La Belle Hélène, Le Dilettante d’Avignon, Barbe-Bleue, Les Chevaliers de la Table ronde and La Fille de Madame Angot. His repertoire also includes Italian bel canto roles such as Nemorino (L’elisir d’amore), Ernesto (Don Pasquale), Elvino (La sonnambula), Count Almaviva (Il barbiere di Siviglia), Don Ramiro (La Cenerentola) and the title role of Le Comte Ory. In addition, he sings French Romantic roles, and repertoire from the 20th century to the present day.

Recent operatic roles have included Tamino (Die Zauberflöte), Ferrando (Così fan tutte), Orphée (Orphée et Eurydice), and the title roles of Rameau’s Platée, Haydn’s Orlando in paladino, Rossini’s Le Comte Ory, Gounod’s Cinq-Mars, Berlioz’s La Damnation de Faust and Zemlinsky’s Der Zwerg. Along with regular appearances at French opera houses, he sings throughout Europe and has performed in Asia and the USA. He has participated in a number of live and studio recordings.

In the 2021/22 season he has sung Abaris (Les Boréades) and Ernesto (Don Pasquale) in Oldenburg, Léopold (L’Auberge du Cheval blanc) in Lausanne, the title role of Platée in Toulouse and Thespis (Platée) at the Paris Opéra. Concert appearances include Berlioz’s Lélio with the Orchestre national du Capitole de Toulouse in Toulouse and at the Paris Philharmonie, and performances of motets by Gervais, Desmarets’ Circé, Monteverdi’s L’Orfeo and Vespro della Beata Vergine, Rameau’s Zoroastre and Marais’ Ariane et Bacchus.
