Peter Schmidt graduated from the Werkkunstschule Kassel in 1958 and moved to Hamburg in 1967 to work as Creative Director for Verclas + Böltz. In 1972, he founded Peter Schmidt Studios together with Waltraud Bethge and managed it until he sold it to BBDO in 2006. In the early years, the company concentrated on packaging design for consumer goods and cosmetics and began designing perfume bottles in 1980 with great success. National and international design commissions, for example for Procter & Gamble, Estée Lauder and Apollinaris, followed this. Peter Schmidt began to take on more corporate design commissions and created corporate images for the Hamburg State Opera, the German Armed Forces and the City of Hamburg, among others. After the founder, left the company, Peter Schmidt Studios was renamed the “Peter Schmidt Group”. Since 2007, Schmidt has been working with a small team of young designers in Hamburg under his own name. In addition to corporate design and product design, Peter Schmidt also designs books, magazines, rooms, stage sets and websites.
