Peter Schöne

With his expressive baritone voice, Peter Schöne is considered one of the most versatile opera, concert and Lieder singers, both nationally and internationally. He completed his studies with Brigitte Fassbaender and Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau, made his operatic debut as Eddy in Mark-Anthony Turnage’s Greek at the Komische Oper Berlin and has since then appeared at more than twenty opera houses in a variety of parts written for his voice type. He is currently a member of the ensemble of the Saarbrücken State Theatre.

Highlights of the 2023/24 season include appearances as Créon in Cherubini’s Médée at the Berlin State Opera, Dunois in a new production of Tchaikovsky’s The Maid of Orléans in Saarbrücken, the principal role in the world premiere of Lucia Ronchetti’s Der Doppelgänger at the Schwetzingen Festival and his debut at the Salzburg Festival.

Recent highlights have included Kurwenal in Wagner’s Tristan und Isolde and his role debut as Puccini’s Gianni Schicchi in Saarbrücken, and his house debuts as Wotan in Das Rheingold at the Paris Opéra and in Peter Eötvös’s Der goldene Drache at the Theater an der Wien. He performed the title role in the German premiere of Pascal Dusapin’s Macbeth Underworld, which was broadcast in 2021 by ARTE.

Since his student days Peter Schöne has been intensely involved with German Lieder for voice and piano, and he is currently working on a complete recording of all Schubert’s Lieder. As a concert soloist he is regularly welcomed to perform with the NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchestra, the Munich Radio Orchestra, the Deutsche Kammer-Virtuosen Berlin, the Ensemble Musikfabrik and the Ensemble Kontrapunkte in Vienna.

Through his collaborations with the pianists Axel Bauni and Jan Philip Schulze and with the composers Pascal Dusapin, Peter Eötvös, Gordon Kampe, Aribert Reimann and Wolfgang Rihm, he has developed a focus on music of the 20th and 21st centuries. He has been awarded the Schneider-Schott-Music Prize in Mainz for his musical commitment. In 2015 he was elected a member of the board of trustees of aDevantgarde in Munich.
