Raúl Gutiérrez

The tenor Raúl Gutiérrez was born in Durango (Mexico) and is one of the most promising lyric tenors of his generation. In the 2024/25 season his appearances include Rodolfo (La bohème) at the Tyrol Festival Erl and his role debut as Arturo (Lucia di Lammermoor) at the Zurich Opera House.

In 2023 he made his European debut in the title role of Massenet’s Werther at the Bregenz Festival under the baton of Claire Levacher and was nominated for the Austrian Music Theatre Award in the category ‘Best Male Newcomer’ for his performances. Highlights of his career to date have included appearances as Albazar (Il turco in Italia) and Danieli (I vespri siciliani) during his time as a member of the International Opera Studio of the Zurich Opera House, concerts at the Eiffel Tower as part of the 2023 Opera for Peace Academy in Paris and his role debuts as Rinuccio (Gianni Schicchi) and as Don Basilio and Don Curzio (Le nozze di Figaro) at the International Summer Opera Festival of Morelia.

Raúl Gutiérrez has worked with conductors such as Marzio Conti, Stefan Veselka and Rodrigo Macías, and developed his vocal technique in lessons and masterclasses with César Ulloa, Emilio Pons, Jennifer Rowley, Brian Jagde and many others.

He studied with the celebrated Mexican tenor Alfredo Portilla in the music faculty of the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM) in Mexico City. As the winner of the UNAM’s Francisco Araiza Singing Competition in 2019, he had the opportunity to work with Francisco Araiza at the European Music Institute in Vienna. He went on to win several prizes at the National Singing Competition Carlo Morelli in Mexico City, including the first prize, the zarzuela prize, the Francisco Araiza prize, the Premio Ópera de Bellas Artes and the Premio MOS (Mexico Opera Studio). In 2022 he also received funding to attend the Sewanee Summer Music Festival and the American Institute of Musical Studies (AIMS) in Graz.
