Sasha Waltz & Guests meets Rimini Protokoll
The dance company Sasha Waltz & Guests was founded in 1993 by Sasha Waltz and Jochen Sandig in Berlin. To date, numerous artists and ensembles from the fields of architecture, visual arts, choreography, film, design, literature, fashion and music from more than 60 countries have participated as “guests” in over 100 productions, dialog projects and films.
Sasha Waltz & Guests works in an international and national, constantly evolving network of production and guest performance partners and has performed at more than 300 international venues and festivals in over 50 countries and 180 cities since its foundation. The company currently presents around 80 performances a year from its repertoire of twelve active productions. In Berlin, Sasha Waltz & Guests cooperates with various institutions such as municipal theaters, opera houses and museums and has contributed to the founding of new cultural institutions (Sophiensæle 1996, St. Elisabeth Church 2004, Radialsystem 2006). In 2013, the company was appointed Cultural Ambassador of the European Union. In 2014, the Fonds Darstellende Künste honored Sasha Waltz & Guests with the George Tabori Honorary Award. In addition to Berlin performances, national and international guest performances and repertoire management, Sasha Waltz & Guests is also extremely active in the field of education and community – for example in connection with the children’s and youth dance company founded in 2007, the ZUHÖREN – Third Space for Art and Politics platform, which has been active since 2016, and various offers in the field of knowledge transfer.
The work In C, based on Terry Riley’s open composition of the same name, has been developing its own system with a growing international community since spring 2021. The choreographic material was recorded in video tutorials to enable easy knowledge transfer, resulting in the creation of participatory, diverse, international and sustainable In C projects, workshop formats and ever new structures worldwide.
As part of the Kontinent Rihm series, Sasha Waltz & Guests performed Jagden und Formen on the Perner-Insel in Hallein in 2010. In 2011, Sasha Waltz Continu presented music by Edgard Varèse, Claude Vivier and Iannis Xenakis at the Salzburg Festival. Sasha Waltz & Guests is supported by the Berlin Senate Department for Culture and Social Cohesion.
