Sebastian Alphons is head of the lighting department at the Graz Opera. In addition to many years of work at the Berlin State Opera, since 1988 he has worked at various theatres both in Germany and abroad as a lighting designer. He was a master student of Domenico Maggiotti, and has been responsible for many theatre and music theatre productions, and for numerous industrial, architectural and touring productions. He has a long-standing working partnership with the artist and director Achim Freyer, for whom he designed lighting for Der Ring des Nibelungen at the National Theatre in Mannheim, and for productions at the Landestheater Linz, the Hamburg State Opera, the Berlin State Opera and various other theatres. With the director Claus Guth he worked on a much-praised production of The Turn of the Screw in 2014 and on The Makropulos Affair in 2022 in Berlin. He has designed lighting for productions by Jürgen Flimm and Ingo Kerkhof in Berlin, at the Mikhailovsky Theatre in St Petersburg and at La Scala, Milan.
More recently, Sebastian Alphons has designed lighting for Jossi Wieler’s production of Lohengrin at the Salzburg Easter Festival and for Evgeny Titov’s production of L’incoronazione di Poppea at the Opéra national du Rhin in Strasbourg. His plans for the 2023/24 season include productions at the Graz Opera and the Vienna State Opera.
