Korean-born American tenor Seiyoung Kim is currently a member of the Opera Studio at the Volksoper Wien, where this season he has performed as Harlequin in Kaiserrequiem—a creation by Omer Meir Wellber and Andreas Heise for the Volksoper Wien and the Vienna State Ballet—and as the Moon and the King of the East in The Enchanted Pig, among other roles.
In the 2023/24 season, Kim made his debut at Houston Grand Opera, where he originated the roles of the Monkey and the Rat in the world premiere of The Big Swim, and at the Glimmerglass Festival, where he performed the roles of Pane and Natura in La Calisto, as well as Little Victor Farrell in Elizabeth Cree. In addition, he sang Britten’s Les Illuminations with the Sejong Soloists and performed with Boston Lyric Opera in the Concerts in the Courtyard series at the Boston Public Library.
His previous operatic roles include the title role in Le Comte Ory, Oronte in Alcina, and the Father in The Seven Deadly Sins at Yale University; Brighella in Ariadne auf Naxos at Wolf Trap Opera; Tamino in Die Zauberflöte, Rinuccio in Gianni Schicchi, and Jimmy O’Keefe in Later the Same Evening at the New England Conservatory; and Fileno in La fedeltà premiata at The Juilliard School.
Kim performed in workshops of The Big Swim with Houston Grand Opera, The House on Mango Street with the Glimmerglass Festival, M. Butterfly with Santa Fe Opera, and Permadeath with White Snake Projects. He has also performed as the tenor soloist in Rossini’s Petite Messe Solennelle at the Hopkins Center for the Arts at Dartmouth College.
Kim has been a member of the Young Artist Programs at Santa Fe Opera, Wolf Trap Opera, and Glimmerglass Festival, and is an alumnus of Houston Grand Opera’s Young Artists Vocal Academy. He holds a Bachelor of Music from The Juilliard School, a Master of Music from the New England Conservatory, and a Master of Musical Arts from Yale University, where he received the prestigious Phyllis Curtin Career Entry Award upon graduation.
