Stefan Gottfried

Stefan Gottfried studied harpsichord, piano, composition and music education at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna, and harpsichord, fortepiano and continuo at the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis. He then embarked on a wide-ranging international concert career as a soloist, chamber musician and continuo player.

From 2004 he worked regularly with the late Nikolaus Harnoncourt, including on opera productions at the Styriarte, the Theater an der Wien (including Mozart’s Da Ponte operas) and the Salzburg Festival (Le nozze di Figaro and Die Zauberflöte), as well as in numerous concerts, including at the Vienna Musikverein, the Berlin Philharmonie and the Lucerne Festival. In 2015 he took over the joint direction of Concentus Musicus Wien along with Erich Höbarth and Andrea Bischof; since then he has conducted both concerts and opera productions at venues including the Golden Hall of the Vienna Musikverein, the International Baroque Festival at Melk Abbey and the Theater an der Wien. He has toured to concert halls such as the Cologne Philharmonie, La Seine Musicale in Paris and London’s Wigmore Hall.

Stefan Gottfried is professor of historical performance practice and director of the Early Music department at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna.
