The Vocal Ensemble of Southwest German Radio is one of the top international ensembles on the professional choir scene. For more than 70 years, the Ensemble has devoted itself to the exemplary performance and further development of vocal music with passion and great expertise. The instrumental tonal culture and vocal and stylistic flexibility of the singers is unique, fascinating not only audiences at international concert halls but also various composers.
Since 1946 the SWR has commissioned several new works for its choir every year. The Ensemble has given the premieres of over 250 new choral works, often making the impossible possible and the unthinkable thinkable. In addition to contemporary music, the SWR Vocal Ensemble focuses on choral works from the Romantic period and the modern era.
Under the leadership of Marcus Creed, who has been artistic director since 2003, the SWR Vocal Ensemble has received numerous accolades for its interpretations of choral music and its stylistically assured performances, including the German Music Critics’ Award of the Year, the Echo Klassik Prize, the Diapason d’Or, the Choc du Monde de la Musique and the Grand Prix du Disque.
