Tareq Nazmi
The bass Tareq Nazmi studied at the University of Music and Performing Arts in Munich with Edith Wiens and Christian Gerhaher, and privately with Hartmut Elbert. As a member first of the Opera Studio and subsequently of the permanent ensemble of the Bavarian State Opera, he appeared with the company in numerous roles.
In the 2022/23 season Tareq Nazmi made his role debut as Gurnemanz (Parsifal) at the Grand Théâtre de Genève and his house debut at the Vienna State Opera as King Heinrich (Lohengrin). He also appeared in a concert performance of Der Ring des Nibelungen under Marek Janowski in Dresden as Hunding (Die Walküre), returned to the Bavarian State Opera as Sarastro (Die Zauberflöte) and performed as a guest at the Salzburg Mozartwoche. In March 2023 he performed with the NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchestra under Manfred Honeck and in June 2023 he appeared with the Musikkollegium Winterthur under Roberto González-Monjas.
Important engagements in past seasons have included his role debuts as Philip II (Don Carlos) at the Theater St Gallen, as Banco (Macbeth) at the Opera Vlaanderen in Antwerp and as King Heinrich in a concert performance of Lohengrin at the Tokyo Spring Festival; he has also sung Sarastro at the Lyric Opera of Chicago, Verdi’s Requiem on a tour conducted by Teodor Currentzis and with the Berlin Philharmonic under Daniel Barenboim, and Beethoven’s Missa solemnis under Kirill Petrenko in Munich. In 2017 Tareq Nazmi made his debut as Zaccaria (Nabucco) in St Gallen. In 2018 he appeared as the Speaker (Die Zauberflöte) under Constantinos Carydis at the Salzburg Festival, returning in 2022 as Sarastro.
As a sought-after concert soloist, Tareq Nazmi performs a wide-ranging repertory including works by Bach, Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven, Brahms and Dvořák. He has sung with the Tonhalle Orchestra Zurich, the Orchestre de Paris under Daniel Harding, the Orquestra Gulbenkian under Alain Altinoglu, the WDR Symphony Orchestra under Jukka-Pekka Saraste, the Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin under Manfred Honeck and with the Balthasar Neumann Choir and Orchestra under Thomas Hengelbrock. He has also performed under Zubin Mehta, Franz Welser-Möst and Kent Nagano. As a recitalist, Tareq Nazmi recently performed with Gerold Huber at the Schubertiade Hohenems, in Munich, Cologne and at London’s Wigmore Hall. In March 2023 he sang Schubert’s Winterreise in Tokyo.
