The bass Tareq Nazmi studied at the University of Music and Theatre in Munich with Edith Wiens and Christian Gerhaher, and privately with Hartmut Elbert. From 2010 to 2012 he was a member of the Opera Studio of the Bavarian State Opera in Munich; since 2016 he has been a member of the company’s ensemble. At the Salzburg Festival he most recently appeared in 2022 as Sarastro (Die Zauberflöte) and in 2023 as Banco (Macbeth). At the 2024 Salzburg Easter Festival he sang the role of Alvise in Ponchielli’s La Gioconda under Antonio Pappano.

In the 2024/25 season Tareq Nazmi made his role debut as Marke (Tristan und Isolde) at the Grand Théâtre de Genève. He went on to sing the same role in concert performances with the Philadelphia Orchestra under Yannick Nézet-Séguin. He also performed Oroveso in a new production of Norma at the Theater an der Wien, Prince Gremin (Eugene Onegin) at the Semperoper Dresden and Gurnemanz (Parsifal) at the Tokyo Spring Festival. In concert he sang the bass part in Verdi’s Messa da Requiem with the Orchestra dell’Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia under Daniel Harding and Pater Profundus in Mahler’s Eighth Symphony with the Vienna Symphony Orchestra under Philippe Jordan.

Recent highlights have included Sarastro in Cleveland under Franz Welser-Möst, Ferrando (Il trovatore) in Munich, Gurnemanz in Munich and Geneva and King Heinrich (Lohengrin) at the Vienna State Opera.

As a concert soloist, Tareq Nazmi appears in a wide repertory of works by composers such as Bach, Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven, Brahms, Dvořák and Mahler. He has worked with orchestras such as the Orchestre de Paris under Daniel Harding, the Orquestra Gulbenkian under Alain Altinoglu, the WDR Symphony Orchestra Cologne under Jukka-Pekka Saraste, the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra and the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra under Manfred Honeck and the Balthasar Neumann Choir and Ensemble under Thomas Hengelbrock.

He has sung the bass solos in Verdi’s Requiem with the Tonhalle Orchestra Zurich under John Eliot Gardiner, on tour with musicAeterna under Teodor Currentzis and with the Berlin Philharmonic under Daniel Barenboim, and in Beethoven’s Missa solemnis with the Bavarian State Orchestra under Kirill Petrenko, with the Munich Philharmonic under Philippe Herreweghe and with the Berlin Radio Symphony Orchestra under Vladimir Jurowski. As a recitalist, Tareq Nazmi has performed with the pianist Gerold Huber at the Schubertiade in Hohenems, in Munich, Cologne and at London’s Wigmore Hall. In spring 2023 he sang Schubert’s Winterreise at the Tokyo Spring Festival.
