The Greek mezzo-soprano Taxiarchoula Kanati made her stage debut in 2011 as Dido (Dido and Aeneas), followed by performances as Baba (The Medium), Carmen, Third Lady (Die Zauberflöte), Alcina in Haydn’s Orlando paladino, Charlotte (Werther) and Composer (Ariadne auf Naxos). In February 2020 she made her debut at the Greek National Opera in Athens as Prince Orlofsky (Die Fledermaus).
On the concert stage she has recently sung the contralto parts in Beethoven’s Missa solemnis and Ninth Symphony at the Stuttgart Liederhalle. In the field of contemporary music, she has given the world premiere of Jochen Neurath’s song cycle Tränen (at the invitation of the composer) at a concert organized by the Richard Wagner Association in Bamberg, which also featured Wagner’s Wesendonck Lieder. Along with regular performances in Germany, she has appeared in concerts in France, Denmark, Norway, Estonia, Russia and Greece.
Taxiarchoula Kanati studied at the State Conservatory in Thessaloniki and the State University of Music and Performing Arts in Stuttgart. In 2016 she was a finalist in the German singing competition Bundeswettbewerb Gesang Berlin. As a finalist in the international singing competition of the Kammeroper Schloss Rheinsberg (2018) she was awarded a role in a new Faust opera by Frank Matthus and Marc-Aurel Floros, A Bad Man’s Life, which received its premiere in June 2018 at the Schloss Rheinsberg chamber opera festival.
