Tobias Niederschlag was born in 1976 in Olpe, Westphalia. He studied musicology, theatre studies and German literature at the LMU Munich and wrote his final thesis on Pierre Boulez’s Notations. Internships during his studies took him to the Berlin and Bavarian State Operas, the Cologne Philharmonie, the Munich Philharmonic and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, among others.
From 2003 to 2017 he was concert dramaturg for the Sächsische Staatskapelle Dresden. Since 2017, he has been head of the concert office at the Leipzig Gewandhaus and is responsible for the artistic planning of all of the Gewandhaus’s own events.
Tobias Niederschlag is co-founder and artistic director of the International Shostakovich Festival Gohrisch, which has been held annually since 2010. He was a member of the board of trustees of the Meetingpoint Music Messiaen in Görlitz-Zgorzelec and is a jury member of the International Carl Nielsen Competition in Odense, the International Bach Competition in Leipzig and the Herbert von Karajan Young Conductors Award of the Salzburg Festival.
He has published numerous texts in publications of the Dresden Semperoper, the Leipzig Gewandhaus and the Munich Philharmonic, as well as booklet texts for labels such as Sony Music, Accentus Music and Deutsche Grammophon.
