Zhengyi Bai

The Chinese tenor Zhengyi Bai began his musical training as a pianist, before studying singing in Shandong and in the USA. He completed San Francisco Opera’s Merola Opera Program, in which capacity he sang the role of Alessandro (Il re pastore), and was a member of the Adler Fellows in 2020. In the 2023/24 season he appeared in San Francisco as Monostatos (Die Zauberflöte), at the Boston Lyric Opera as Colin in Joseph Bologne’s L’Amante anonyme and at the Virginia Opera as Goro (Madama Butterfly).

In the 2022/23 season he was engaged by the Metropolitan Opera in New York as the understudy for the role of Valzacchi (Der Rosenkavalier). He has also been an artist in residence with the Opera San José, performing roles that include Basilio (Le nozze di Figaro), Dr Caius (Falstaff) and the Hunchback Brother (Die Frau ohne Schatten).

Other roles that Zhengyi Bai has performed on stange include Fong See in Nathan Wang’s On Gold Mountain at the Los Angeles Opera and First Prisoner (Fidelio), Ballet Master/Lamplighter (Manon Lescaut) and Remendado (Carmen) at the San Francisco Opera. He has also appeared in recitals and concerts for The Schwabacher Recital Series and in the series The Future is Now: Adlers in Concert in San Francisco.
