About the Production: A Midsummer Night’s Dream
The renowned Swedish choreographer Alexander Ekman let the traditions of his Nordic homeland inspire him to create a dance work acclaimed around the world: the feast of the summer solstice. There is laughter, dancing and drinking – a celebration of life. In the twilight of impending night, however, the borders of imagination and reality blur. Nothing is impossible: long tables levitate as if lifted by ghostly hands, humans whirl through the air, huge fishes swim through the stage sets, and the stage is transformed into a magical forest! – In this ballet, premiered in Stockholm in 2015, Ekman once again proves himself a magician of dance, devising a choreographic landscape of the soul that is full of poetry, clever humour and ambiguity. One of the most well-known composers in Sweden, Mikael Karlsson, composed an enchanting score for this ballet, oscillating between mythical energy and mesmerizing sensuality. During the 2024 Festival summer, A Midsummer Night’s Dream will be presented in Salzburg in the version by the Dortmund Ballet.
