26 July – 30 August

The new Large Festival Hall – after plans by Clemens Holzmeister – was opened on the morning of 26 July 1960 with an official ceremony under the musical direction of Herbert von Karajan.

In the evening, Der Rosenkavalier by Richard Strauss followed as première to open the new venue – with Lisa Della Casa, Otto Edelmann, Sena Jurinac, Erich Kunz and Hilde Güden. Herbert von Karajan conducted the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra. The stage set was designed by Teo Otto, and Rudolf Hartmann was the stage director. The first night turned out to be a huge media spectacle. Première guests were given a rose and the festschrift Salzburg Souvenir with facsimile signatures of the cast, set designs and excerpts from Hofmannsthal’s libretto.

With his productions in the Large Festival Hall in the following years, Karajan succeeded in further enhancing the international image of the Festival. Whereas in previous decades the Vienna State Opera ensemble had dominated the cast lists, now Salzburg became the hub for polyglot world stars.
