The young outsider Vittorio has never really worked in his life and everyone, therefore, only calls him “Accattone” – parasite. Growing up in a suburb of Rome, he lives separately from his wife and child with the prostitute Maddalena, who provides for the both of them. After Maddalena is arrested one day, Accattone meets the young and innocent Stella and subsequently tries to fundamentally change himself and his life.

In his debut film, Pier Paolo Pasolini staged the story of the Roman suburban pimp Accattone as a passion story, accompanied by the sounds of Johann Sebastian Bach. Formally still partly bound to neorealism, Accattone marks a turning point in Italian film history due to its strongly mythical visual aesthetics.
